About the 2008 Rockwell Scholarship Winner

The Junior League of Albany awarded the 2008 Rockwell Scholarship to Erin Roche, a graduating senior at Niskayuna High School who will be attending Boston College in the fall. Ms. Roche was chosen to receive the scholarship which honors the late Marjorie Doyle Rockwell, a member of the Junior League and well known member of the Capital District.

Each year, the Rockwell Scholarship is presented to a graduating senior within the Capital District who demonstrates excellence in a combination of academics, citizenship and voluntarism in organizations or activities which serve the same or related focus areas as the Junior League of Albany’s area of women and children’s health.

Community Council Vice President Sarah Kenning stated, “Erin Roche’s application stood out among the other applicants we received in part because she has had a history of volunteering in our focus area, as well as with organizations that the League brought to the Capital District such as Gilda’s Club.” In addition to volunteering with Gilda’s Club, Ms. Roche has earned her Gold Award in the Girl Scout’s and has volunteered with the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Capital District Bike Camp.

Grants

One way that the Junior League of Albany supports local organizations is through community grants.

With the help of two grants recently awarded by The Junior League of Albany, more local families will receive two important necessities: fresh produce and diapers. The Capital District Community Gardens was awarded $3000 to support its new Veggie Mobile project. Launched in April 2007, The Veggie Mobile is a mobile market selling nutritious fruits and vegetables in underserved neighborhoods throughout Albany, Troy and Schenectady. The grant awarded by The Junior League of Albany will further The Veggie Mobile’s mission “to make healthy foods more affordable and accessible to low-income residents by selling directly to the people, year-round at wholesale cost.”

The Food Pantries for the Capital District, a coalition of 43 pantries throughout Albany and Rensselaer Counties, was awarded a grant of $5000 to purchase much-needed diapers for families unable to afford them. These are among the items not available for purchase using public assistance. Using the grant funds, The Food Pantries for the Capital District purchased over 45,000 packages of diapers to distribute to families throughout the region. In April 2006, the League granted funds to the Capital City Rescue Mission to renovate the kitchen at their New Faith Family Center.
