Kids In Motion 2007-2008

Project Summary:
Girls Incorporated of the Greater Capital Region in Albany will be host to this year’s Kids in Motion program.  Girls Inc.  inspires girls to be strong, smart and boldSM and offers a variety of free programs  to girls in grades 1st-12th that are designed to enable girls to take healthy risks, try new things and grow into smart, capable women.  Kids in Motion will be one of their Saturday programs for girls in grades 3rd-5th and will focus on engaging the girls in fitness and nutrition based activities to increase knowledge regarding the importance of being physically active and making healthy food choices.

Goals:

  1.  Participants will learn about food classification systems and begin to learn about nutrients in foods.
  2. Participants will be able to use the USDA Food Pyramid to assist in making healthy food choices.
  3. Participants will understand the effects food choices have on body composition.
  4. Participants will continue to enjoy physical activities and learn to set and use personal goals for developing or maintaining physical fitness, recognizing that even moderate physical activity can help prevent obesity and heart disease.
  5. Participants will investigate the relationships involving aerobic endurance, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance and self-image.

Session Details:
The Kids in Motion program will allow for a maximum of 20 participants and will consist of six sessions across six months running from 11am- 2pm.  Registered girls will be asked to attend all sessions.  Each session will include fitness education, provided by a personal trainer and nutrition education provided by a pediatric dietitian.   In addition the girls will be engaged in a physical activity such as yoga, dance, basketball and Pilates; and also a simple snack making activity.  The girls along with the Junior League mentors will keep a fitness and nutrition journal to assist with goal setting and carryover.

Session 4:  Pump It Up/ How Much to Eat

Fitness- Explain the importance of strength exercises
Nutrition- Explain a food label and it’s components

Session 5: Toughen Up/Cut the Fat
January 12, 2008
Fitness- Demonstrate muscle-strengthening exercises
Nutrition- List ways to reduce fat and calories in fast food meals

Session 6:  Chill Out/Breakfast
February 9, 2008
Fitness- Explain the benefits of stretching
Nutrition-understand the importance of eating breakfast
